Internet Upload Speed Requirements

How much upload speed your system needs, how to test it, and what to do if it's too low.

Why upload speed matters

When an event happens at your property, your Deep Sentinel Hub sends live video from your cameras to our guards. That uses your internet upload speed, not your download speed. Most internet plans are sold on download speed, so upload speed is often much lower than people expect.

Low upload speeds can prevent guards from receiving videos during an event, affecting their ability to respond. You may also notice:

  • Delayed or failed video uploads
  • Distorted or missing audio

How much upload speed do I need?

Your hub needs 5 Mbps, plus 1.5 Mbps for each camera.

Cameras Required upload speed
1 6.5 Mbps
2 8 Mbps
3 9.5 Mbps
4 11 Mbps
6 14 Mbps
8 17 Mbps
10 20 Mbps

This is a minimum. Other devices on your network share the same upload capacity.

How to check your upload speed

In the Deep Sentinel app (recommended). This tests your hub's own connection, which is the one that matters.

  1. Open the Deep Sentinel app.
  2. Go to Settings > Device Manager > Hub Speed Test.
  3. Run the test and check the upload result.

Using a phone or computer. This is a quick check of your home internet.

  1. Connect to your home Wi-Fi. On a phone or tablet, turn cellular data off.
  2. Search Google for "Speed Test" and select Run Speed Test.
  3. Check the upload result.

This test measures your phone or computer's connection, not the hub's wired connection, so the results can differ. For the most accurate result, use the Hub Speed Test in the app.

Your hub also runs its own upload speed test once a day.

Low Upload Speed alerts

If your hub's last 3 daily speed tests are all well below the required speed, we send a Low Internet Upload Speed Detected email and an in-app notification. The email lists the results of those tests. If a line says "Your hub could not finish the speed test," the connection was too slow or unstable for the test to finish.

  • We send at most one alert per hub per week.
  • The alert goes to everyone with access to the property who has System Notifications turned on.

How to improve your upload speed

  1. Restart your modem and router. Unplug them for 30 seconds, plug them back in, and wait for your internet to come back online. Then run the Hub Speed Test again.
  2. Check what upload speed you're paying for. You can find this on your internet bill or in your internet service provider (ISP) account.
  3. If you aren't getting the speed you pay for, contact your ISP, or your IT team for a business network, and ask for a service visit.

If your plan's upload speed is below the requirement, ask your ISP about a plan with a higher upload speed. If they can't offer one, check whether other providers in your area can.
