Camera Positioning Checklist

For further reading please see "Deep Sentinel Camera Positioning Guide" which contains in depth guidance on Camera placement and setup.

DONE Action

[ ]

If Camera is monitoring an entryway/gate/door, check FOV shows the actual doorway, door handle and ideally the approach. This enables guards to see if a suspect is attempting to break in.

[ ]

Check Camera height:

- WIRELESS: Maximum 6-8’ and at a 15 - 25 degree downward angle. Any higher will reduce range (20-25') and may skew the camera's AI. Furthermore night vision will be hindered at higher heights.

- POE: Height 10-14' above surface. At 10' high, the camera range is approximately 50 ft. Higher than 15' will reduce range and may skew quality. It will also require a bullhorn for audio to be functional. Furthermore night vision will be hindered at higher heights.

[ ]

Identify any adjustments needed for mounting: boxes, custom mounts, material

[ ]

Confirm lighting for night-vision.

  • Night vision has a natural range of 10-20 ft depending on the environment.
  • POE with Starlight (color night vision) has a much longer range but is dependent on ambient light.
  • These lights on Amazon (https://smile.amazon.com/Aootek-lights-outdoor-Waterpro-Anglefor/dp/B077BFM2W5 ) are fantastic for both Wireless and POE for extending night vision. They are typically mounted 15-30 ft from the camera to illuminate the subject beyond the range of the lights on the camera. As many as 3-4 or even more may be mounted per camera if needed (e.g., to illuminate a long driveway and trigger POE motion detection)

WIRELESS SPECIFIC CHECKS

DONE Action

[ ]

2+ bar signal strength for all cameras (verify using the apps Device Manager screen)

[ ]

Aimed to capture mostly side-to-side traffic. The motion detector is a PIR (passive infra red) which is most sensitive to traffic across the camera's field-of-view vs. towards/away from the camera.

[ ]

Camera FOV excludes road or sidewalk (busy public areas will create false events, and will burn out the camera's battery too quickly)

[ ]

Camera FOV excludes objects that move in the wind frequently -- leafy plants with long branches, flags are the worst. (even though the protection zone can exclude these, the excessive events will likely burn out the camera's battery too quickly)

[ ]

Identify power source: Battery, solar, wall-powered

POE SPECIFIC CHECKS

DONE Action
[ ]

Minimizing trenching/wiring. Position cameras pointed away from each other using the same mount-point or even junction box.

[ ]

Identify any cameras that are in "hot-spots" (high frequency or likelihood of crime) to add a bullhorn speaker

[ ]

Identify the correct type of camera (dome/bullet) and resolution based on customer needs at this location.
