PTZ Camera Best Practices
How to configure PTZ cameras for reliable security coverage, including when to lock them in place, how to safely enable movement, and how to set protection zones to avoid missed events or excessive alerts.
Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras offer flexibility by allowing you to move and zoom your camera view. However, because PTZ cameras change what they’re looking at, they must be configured carefully to ensure consistent and reliable protection.
Without proper setup, PTZ cameras can:
- Miss important activity outside the current view
- Move critical areas out of protection zones
- Reduce overall detection effectiveness
To get the best results, follow the recommendations below. For a list of supported PTZ cameras, see the List of Supported Cameras.

Recommended Default (Basic Setup)
For the most reliable protection, we recommend configuring your PTZ camera like a fixed camera.
What to do:
-
-
Set a Home Position (default view)
-
Disable:
-
Auto-tracking
-
Patrols / cruising
-
-
Keep the camera pointed at your main area of concern
-
Why this works best:
-
-
Your protection zones stay consistent
-
Important areas are always covered
-
Detection accuracy is more reliable
-
Using PTZ Movement (Advanced Setup)
If you want your camera to move or auto-track objects, additional configuration is required to maintain coverage. Only use this setup in areas where motion is expected and manageable.
IMPORTANT: Set your protection zone to cover the full width of the screen
Because the camera is moving:
-
-
A smaller zone may miss activity when the camera shifts
-
Full-screen zones ensure detection remains active regardless of position
-
Avoid using PTZ movement:
-
-
Busy streets
-
High-traffic sidewalks
-
Areas with constant movement (trees, flags, heavy traffic)
-
Recommended PTZ Settings
1. Set your protection zone to cover the full width of the screen
-
-
This can be done in the Deep Sentinel app.
-
Go to Device Manager > Select your PTZ camera > Edit Protection Zone > Ensure the entire field of view is marked in red.
-
2. Set a Home Position
-
-
Your Home Position should:
-
-
-
-
Cover your most important area (e.g., entrance, driveway)
-
Be where the camera returns after movement
-
-
3. Enable Auto-Return
-
-
Your camera should always return to its Home Position after moving. In the PTZ camera's settings:
-
Enable Return to Home
- Set Idle Time to 10 seconds
-
-
This ensures the camera doesn’t stay zoomed in or pointed away for too long.
-
4. Use Auto-Tracking Carefully
-
-
Auto-tracking allows the camera to follow motion, but it should be limited. Recommended settings:
-
-
-
-
Set Auto-Track Sensitivity to Medium
-
Set Zoom Level to Limited (avoid maximum zoom)
-
Set Tracking Duration to 10 seconds
-
-
If tracking is too aggressive:
-
-
-
-
The camera may zoom in too far
- Other activity can move out of view
-
-
Important Scenario: Multiple People in View
If two people are visible and the camera tracks one, the second person may move out of frame and important activity could be missed.
How to reduce this risk:
-
-
Limit zoom levels
-
Keep tracking duration short
-
Ensure the camera returns to the Home Position quickly
-
Consider adding a fixed camera for full coverage
-
Features to Avoid
For security monitoring, we do not recommend:
-
-
Patrol / Cruise Mode - continuously moves the camera between preset positions
-
Why to avoid it:
-
-
Your camera may shift away during a Live Guard Intervention
-
Your camera may miss a security event entirely
-
Best Use Cases for PTZ Cameras
PTZ cameras work best when used to:
-
-
Monitor large open areas (parking lots, yards, warehouses)
-
Provide additional visibility alongside fixed cameras
-
They are not recommended as the only camera covering:
-
-
Entry points
-
Doors or gates
-
High-risk areas
-
Review Checklist
Best Performance:
✔ Keep the camera locked in place
✔ Use a defined Home Position
✔ Fine-tune protection zones
If Using Movement:
✔ Set protection zones to full screen
✔ Enable quick return to Home Position
✔ Limit tracking sensitivity and zoom
✔ Use in low-traffic areas
